12 Summer Romances (6 YA + 6 Adult)

Okay, before I start, I’ve already lied to you. Well, I misled you.

Technically, some of these books don’t take place during summer, so they aren’t all exactly “summer” romances. That said, they all give me a summer vibe, and I would read all of them on a beach, so I think they count.

For me, summer is the perfect time to dive into romances. I always start my summer with a list of cute rom-coms on my TBR, but come August, I’ve completely gone through it.

I figured I can’t be the only one with this problem, so I’ve compiled a different list of a few of my favorites that you can add to your TBR this summer!

Read more to see 6 summer YA romances, plus 6 summer adult/new adult romances!

As I was writing this, WordPress decided to crash and lose all of my work. Yeah, two hours worth of writing synopses for books and formatting everything- just gone.

Instead of spending another 2-3 hours trying to redo all of that, I’m going to switch it up. I’ll just be using the Goodreads/Amazon synopses instead of creating my own, but if I have a review of the book, I’ll link to that.

Hopefully you guys find that okay, because I think my soul will die if I type all of that up again.

This book was one of the first books that got me into contemporaries. I just loved it so much, and I’m hoping to reread it soon. With themes of family, first love, and friendship, how can you not want this as a part of your summer reading list?

“The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom – until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.
Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove[…]
Christian Kane is a notorious playboy – insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother, Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.
When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though – swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. “Classic movie fan Bailey โ€œMinkโ€ Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online as Alex. Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush.
Faced with doubts (what if heโ€™s a creep in real lifeโ€”or worse?), Bailey doesnโ€™t tell Alex sheโ€™s moved to his hometown. Or that sheโ€™s landed a job at the local tourist-trap museum. Or that sheโ€™s being heckled daily by the irritatingly hot museum security guard, Porter Rothโ€”a.k.a. her new archnemesis. But life is a whole lot messier than the movies, especially when Bailey discovers that tricky fine line between hate, love, and whatever it is sheโ€™s starting to feel for Porter.
And as the summer months go by, Bailey must choose whether to cling to a dreamy online fantasy in Alex or take a risk on an imperfect reality with Porter. “

Goodreads

Jenn Bennett has become one of my all-time favorite YA contemporary writers. Her books are cute, fun, but realistic and not completely lighthearted. I honestly could have included any of her books here, but Alex, Approximately is definitely the most “summer romance”-y of the bunch. However, if you’ve already read it and haven’t picked up any of her other books, I highly recommend them!

Fresh out of high school, Babe Vogel should be thrilled to have the whole summer at her fingertips. She loves living in her lighthouse home in the sleepy Maine beach town of Oarโ€™s Rest and being a barista at the Busy Bean, but sheโ€™s totally freaking out about how her life will change when her two best friends go to college in the fall. And when a reckless kiss causes all three of them to break up, she may lose them a lot sooner. On top of that, her ex-girlfriend is back in town, bringing with her a slew of memories, both good and bad.
And then thereโ€™s Levi Keller, the cute artist whoโ€™s spending all his free time at the coffee shop where she works. Leviโ€™s from out of town, and even though Babe knows better than to fall for a tourist who will leave when summer ends, she canโ€™t stop herself from wanting to know him. Can Babe keep her distance, or will she break the one rule sheโ€™s always had – to never fall for a summer boy?

Goodreads

I know I talk about this book a lot, but there’s a reason for it!! It’s an LGBTQ+ contemporary romance dealing with friendships and friendship-break-ups, all in a small beach town. It’s basically everything I ever wanted in a book, so of course I won’t stop talking about it! You really need to read this one. Trust me.

Annie Mathers is Americaโ€™s sweetheart and heir to a country music legacy full of all the things her Gran warned her about. Superstar Clay Coolidge is most definitely going to end up one of those things.
But unfortunately for Clay, if he canโ€™t convince Annie to join his summer tour, his music label is going to drop him. Thatโ€™s what happens when your bad boy image turns into bad boy reality. Annie has been avoiding the spotlight after her parentsโ€™ tragic death, except on her skyrocketing YouTube channel. Clayโ€™s label wants to land Annie, and Clay has to make it happen.
Swayed by Clayโ€™s undeniable charm and good looks, Annie and her band agree to join the tour. From the start fans want them to be more than just tour mates, and Annie and Clay canโ€™t help but wonder if the fans are right. But if thereโ€™s one part of fame Annie wants nothing to do with, itโ€™s a high-profile relationship. She had a front row seat to her parentsโ€™ volatile marriage and isnโ€™t interested in repeating history. If only she could convince her heart that Clay, with his painful past and head over heels inducing tenor, isnโ€™t worth the risk. “

Goodreads

This book is so good. I will warn you- it’s definitely the least summery of the bunch, but that’s mostly because it’s not quite as lighthearted. There are some heavier topics discussed in this book, but trust me when I say it handles them so well. This is the perfect book to pick up if you’re looking for something a little darker to break up your lighter reads!

Rosa Santos is cursed by the sea-at least, that’s what they say. Dating her is bad news, especially if you’re a boy with a boat.
But Rosa feels more caught than cursed. Caught between cultures and choices. Between her abuela, a beloved healer and pillar of their community, and her mother, an artist who crashes in and out of her life like a hurricane. Between Port Coral, the quirky South Florida town they call home, and Cuba, the island her abuela refuses to talk about.
As her college decision looms, Rosa collides – literally – with Alex Aquino, the mysterious boy with tattoos of the ocean whose family owns the marina. With her heart, her family, and her future on the line, can Rosa break a curse and find her place beyond the horizon?”

Goodreads

Confession Time! I haven’t actually read this book yet. I know, I’m ashamed, but it is on my summer TBR!!! Because everyone has said wonderful things about this book, and it seems like such a perfect beach read, I had to include it on this list. I mean, look at that cover? Does that not scream summer??

“Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. Sheโ€™s charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual.
Trapped in a shared office together 40 (OK, 50 or 60) hours a week, theyโ€™ve become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship. Thereโ€™s the Staring Game. The Mirror Game. The HR Game. Lucy canโ€™t let Joshua beat her at anythingโ€”especially when a huge new promotion goes up for the taking.
If Lucy wins this game, sheโ€™ll be Joshuaโ€™s boss. If she loses, sheโ€™ll resign. So why is she suddenly having steamy dreams about Joshua, and dressing for work like sheโ€™s got a hot date? After a perfectly innocent elevator ride ends with an earth-shattering kiss, Lucy starts to wonder whether sheโ€™s got Joshua Templeman all wrong.
Maybe Lucy Hutton doesnโ€™t hate Joshua Templeman. And maybe, he doesnโ€™t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.”

Goodreads

This book is what finally pushed me into reading adult romances. Yeah, I had read a couple before this one, but this is the book that made me fall in love with the genre. I know it’s been talked about by most everyone, but if you haven’t read it yet, this summer is the perfect time (especially with the movie in the works)!

“Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases โ€” a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.
It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice โ€” with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan โ€” from foreplay to more-than-missionary position…
Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic… ”

Firstly, if you aren’t a fan of series, don’t worry. This is just a series of companion novels, so you don’t have to commit to them. But trust me when I say, after reading this, you will want to. I just love this book so much. These characters are just absolutely amazing and you will not regret picking this up!

“Hazel Camille Bradford knows sheโ€™s a lot to takeโ€”and frankly, most men arenโ€™t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd donโ€™t send them running, her lack of filter means sheโ€™ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. Sheโ€™s a good soul in search of honest fun.
Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they metโ€”when she gracelessly threw up on his shoesโ€”to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air.
Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means thereโ€™s nothing between them…right?”

Goodreads

I have two Christina Lauren books on this list because I am addicted to their books. However, this one is by far my favorite of theirs. It’s a friends-to-lovers done so well, you won’t be able to put it down. I know I wasn’t able to.

“First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veepโ€™s genius granddaughter, theyโ€™re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsidesโ€”namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.
The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his motherโ€™s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henryโ€™s Prince Charming veneer, thereโ€™s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.
As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?”

Goodreads

You all knew I would have to put this book on here. It’s my obsession. The love of my life. I know this book is getting a lot of hype right now, but let me tell you, it deserves all of it. This book is really something special. Not only is it an adorable romance with enemies-to-lovers and plenty of wit, but it’s also a powerful read that you don’t want to miss.

“Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, inโ€ฆwell, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancรฉ is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and sheโ€™s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, sheโ€™s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.
Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who arenโ€™t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now thereโ€™s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.
Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesnโ€™t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.”

Goodreads

While Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating may be my favorite Christina Lauren book, this one is pretty close. Enemies-to-lovers, fake datings, and basically every other classic trope everyone loves found their way into this extremely fun read.

“Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to stop thinking about him?
The faire is Simon’s family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn’t have time for Emily’s lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely with Emily when she’s in her revealing wench’s costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they’re portraying?
This summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else for Emily, but soon she can’t seem to shake the fantasy of establishing something more with Simon, or a permanent home of her own in Willow Creek.”
