Review in a Nutshell: My Lady Jane is the perfect fun, lighthearted comedy, filled with plenty of references and jokes that will actually make you laugh out loud.

Premise:

My Lady Jane is a fun, happy retelling of the story of Lady Jane Grey. You might wonder how that’s possible, considering Jane Grey was queen for only nine days before she was beheaded, so how can her story be happy? That, you’ll have to find out for yourself.

Writing 

This book was just so well written. The writing style wasrefreshingly witty and fun, with the authors directly acknowledging the reader and several fun references thrown in. I also loved how, while yes the references are fun and entertaining, they never took over the book or distracted from a scene. Honestly, everything about the writing of the book is what makes it stand out so much. Yes, every other aspect of it was good too, but it’s the writing that makes this book truly unique and un-putdownable. 

“Because he was English and that’s what the English do under stress: they drink tea.”

Plot & Setting

Technically, My Lady Jane is historical, but there’s also shapeshifting- so I wouldn’t go into this expecting heavy historical accuracy. However, the fantasy aspects were metaphors for the actual historical events at the time, so you do get a taste of what was really going on. That said, I loved the magic in this book. Shapeshifting is always fun, but the authors managed to interweave it so well with the world and the politics. 

The plot itself is also really well done. The pages flew by for me because I was so excited to see how the characters were going to get out of each situation they find themselves in. The only problem I could see was that sometimes I felt like the more serious moments went by a little too quick. They could have used an extra beat or so to let it sink in before throwing in another joke. 

”Jane sat back on the bed while her husband scrambled to his feet.
‘My Lady, please! I am indecent.’
‘You are,’ Jane agreed. ‘Not to mention the fact that you are also unclothed’”

Characters

These characters are absolutely fantastic. We follow Edward, Jane, and Gifford (G), and this was one of the rare occasions where I didn’t prefer some POVs over others. Each of them had a compelling story, arc, and were just fun to read about. I also really loved Jane and G’s relationship. It’s a slow burn, hate-to-love relationship, and it’s absolutely adorable. 

“He wanted to tell her she’d have more room if she’d just get rid of her books, but he supposed that in her case, it would be like telling a mother she’d have more room if she threw out her children.”

Conclusion

Pros- Hilarious, fun, perfect for a reading slump! 
Cons- If you don’t enjoy feeling happy, then maybe skip this one 
Overall- 5/5 stars. 
My Lady Jane is just pure fun. It reminded me why I loved to read– and the pure joy reading can bring.
